Have you ever wondered how the Birrarung (Yarra River) got its name and what it means? Or wanted to know the local language word for an animal, plant or place? Or why Toorak “reedy swamp” or Tullamarine (Tullamareena was a senior man of the Wurundjeri) have the names they have? Many places in Australia have Indigenous names, yet few know the meaning of these words or even that they have Aboriginal origins.
Come and learn Melbourne’s oldest and original languages in fun and interactive traditional song and dance workshops. Wurundjeri Elders, and their dancers, will be in residence at City Library throughout YIRRAMBOI, to sing and move you through local customs, law and language. Workshops are free and designed for all ages. Everyone is invited.
Be quick to secure your spot. These workshops are sure to book fast.
Presented by YIRRAMBOI and City of Melbourne Libraries
