Writer and creative Monique Grbec was born on Eora country, raised on Woi Wurrung country, and lives on Wurundjeri country. As part of Barring Yanabul, she presents Bring Them Home, a series of mixed media, interactive and audio installations responding to the Bringing Them Home Report (BTHR) and stolen generations.
Bring Them Home progresses from works made from glittered fibreglass resin, to a spoken word audio poem of words from a mother to her child – words that institutionalised children do not hear – and culminates in a healing woven grass ritual where audiences will be invited to weave a giant grass matt with Monique. The nurturing beauty of a weaving circle offers opportunities for participants to hear the artist’s personal devotion to her mother, and share their own family stories.
Monique is also a 2019 YIRRAMBOI Festival Blak Critic. Her writing perspective is viewed through the lens of Indigenous standpoint theory, and she won the inaugural Life Writing Award for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander authors at the Lord Mayor’s Creative Writing Awards 2017.
