Storytelling and Ochre Art Workshop

12 May $16 1 hr

In this enchanting session for primary school children, Annette Sax, Yarn Strong Sista Aboriginal storyteller presents Bartja and Mayila in a storytelling session celebrating the voice of our Elders.

When Bartja’s best friend Mayila plans to leave the forest they live in to visit the ocean, Bartja wants to find her the perfect parting gift. With some advice from Uncle Ambrose and forest animals, Bartja creates a gift that Mayila will treasure.

Bartja and Mayila is written by Sue Atkinson, Yorta Yorta author, and illustrated by Annette Sax, Taungurung artist, bringing Victorian Aboriginal culture to life through the contemporary story.

After the story session, Annette Sax will facilitate an Ochre painting experience using natural materials collected from Country. Children will crush the ochre and paint on bark, gum leaves, paper bark and paper using sticks, feathers or gumnuts.
