In Uncle Herb Patten’s hands, a gumleaf can produce remarkable musical sounds as sweet and seductive as a blues harmonica player. He took the nation by storm as a contestant on Channel 7’s show, Australia’s Got Talent, making his way into the inaugural Grand Final.
Uncle Herb taught himself to play the leaf when he was about eight years old, after hearing his great uncle blowing a leaf in the bush near where the family lived in a small town called Numeralla, near Orbost, in south-east Victoria. Over the last 70 years, Uncle Herb has become a skilled and passionate exponent of the gumleaf.
